Biographical Note

Havas was France's first news agency (founded 1835) and a parent company to what would become France's central news source during and after the Resistance, l'Agence France Press. During the Spanish Civil War (1936-39), its journalists, known as Havasmen, were in the field in Madrid, Salamanca, Barcelona, and abroad in Mexico and in South America, reporting back to Paris and Geneva on the state of the Spanish citizenry.

Scope and Content Note

Collection consists of 32 printed telegrams and one translation, occasionally with substantial manuscript revisions, concentrating on the years 1936 and 1938. The collection of telegrams contains several of the reports of Henri Malet-Daubant and Jean d'Hospital, among the first special envoys to Spain. Several items are undated and have unidentified senders or receivers.

Arrangement Note

Telegrams are organized loosely by topic: folders 1-7 deal with military affairs (promotions, campaigns); folders 9-14 give details on Spain's foreign relations with the Latin South and the reception of Spanish refugees; 15-21 are concerned with the sayings of high military and government officials (including Franco); 22-26 focus on the Spanish Nobel Prize-winner in Literature, Jacinto Benavente; and 27-31 report the finding of the statue of Our Lady of Covadonga at the Spanish Embassy in Paris.
