Biographical Note

Thomas Davis (1814-45) was a leading Irish nationalist, writer and co-founder of The Nation, and a leader in the Young Ireland movement.

In 1842, Davis founded The Nation along with Charles Gavan Duffy and John Blake Dillon. This weekly paper was extremely popular and influential, with Thomas Davis as its main contributor. Davis composed and contributed many verses and songs, of which "The West's Awake" and "A Natin Once Again" are among the best known.

Scope and Content Note

The Thomas Davis Collection consists of manuscript drafts of fourteen verses or songs, and one clipping with handwritten amendments, of "The West's Asleep".

The verses are in separate folders, arranged alphabetically either by title or, where no title is apparent, by the first line.
